New to the slant
I just recently bought an 87 D150 short bed with a /6,904,3.21 rear.I got a set of Clifford Headers and intake off Ebay this afternoon.I should have no problems running an Eddy 500 on this should I?I also am going to install an MSD 6a with a vac advance dizzy to get rid of the ESA.

In the weather of DE you are likely to find that headers with no provision for carb heat is going to be fairly cold blooded. If it were me, I'd try to duplicate the old Ford style water heated carb spacers they used to use, and maybe think about "rigging" an air filter with snorkle heat, at least for part of the year.
I think a 500 is way overkill with a stock cam. |

The intake I got has coolant passages already plumbed in.I noticed the seller was from New England!

Those 3:21 gears sound like a problem to me. Gonna kill the bottom end.

Could I run the ESA with the intake and carb?

Rich, do you think about a 3.55 or so would be a lot better?
Or maybe a 3.7? I have no idea what ratio is in mine, what I got is what I got, but it seemed to be revving pretty hard at 70mph. Yet it was also no jet up the big hills. |

It's a bit of a crap shoot I suppose. 3:21 = probably better mpg. 3:55 and up = more zap but the top end starts going away if you're doing the running mile :-) I actually almost doubled my gas mileage by going from the 2:76 to the 3:91. That's due to the 3000 stall converter and the way the whole set-up works. It needs to be a good match component wise. My brand X daily driver has a 3:78 (?) gear set but it also has overdrive. It does well on fuel even with the 3:78. |
