I have a 225 out of a 1968 Valiant and was hoping to fit a later head with the revised combustion chamber and no spark plug tubes.
I am sure that it is possible but what would I need to replace as well? Rocker gear, push rods, would I have to use hydraulic lifters and cam? I have searched various sites but haven't seen a straight up answer, many speculate but apparently few have done this. Thank you for any help and info. ![]() |

All slant 6 heads are interchangeable. Use the appropriate valve train for the cam used. They didn't switch to hydraulic lifters till 1981.

google /6 mopar everything you ever wanted to know is there, by the way I learned that the oil for the hydroid lifter comes from the rocker shaft through the pushrod to the lifter to oil it! there is no oil galley around lifter, like all other hyd.lifters cant see how it works ,but it does.

Thanks for the comments, I just need to make sure that when I do start raiding the wreckers I get the appropriate parts and don't leave anything behind.
I know about the oiling differences that is why I have some questions, I also know that the bottom end is slightly different but don't really want to use that preferring to use the earlier lower short block and stick with a mechanical cam. |

Unless there is something drastic wrong with your head there is not much reason to switch to the later head. A lot of lip service is given to the "revised" chamber, but it really didn't amount to much in practice.
Any generation head will switch over, the big thing you have to watch for is the later solid heads used a different bolt in the rear rocker shaft hole for better oiling. You must use the bolt and rocker shaft that match the style of head. Everything else interchanges. You can even use the '81 up hydraulic head, but you need the valve cover with it as it is different. The mechanical rocker gear bolts on, there will be no issues. Again, it will have the stepped bolt in the rear rocker shaft hole. ![]() |
