Default distributor/emission controls

84Dodge D150 225ci auto
A few years back I bought a MOPAR parts high performance distributer for my truck. It was a special order from the parts dept. When I ordered and paid for it I had already purchased the normal, ( no advance) distributer. OK that one went bad and since I already had the high performance dist, it was installed.
My mechanic could never quite get the timing set. When it ran good it pinged. When it didn't ping it didn't run good.( no power)
I live in California. I finaly got a "test only" notice from DMV. So I took it to a "test only" smog station. It didn't pass. It needed various smog valves replaced and I was told the dist. would have to be replaced also. (outside of a sometimes rough idle and the pinging it semed ok)
On a fairly long up-hill grade the other night, while coming home from work, it all of the sudden started to loose power and miss. (end result: burned piston)
My question is this; was it the constant pinging---the smog valves---combination of both that burned the piston?
The motor was rebuilt and the first time I drove the truck(this morning) on a fairly long up-hill grade it started to loose power and make poping noises from under hood. ?????????????

Sounds like your cintrifical (bad spelling) advance springs are too light, causing your advance to come on to soon. Take the springs (or at least your heavy spring) out of your old distributer and put it in your new one. This will slow down your mechanical advance. You can also adjust your vacuum advance with a 3/32 allan wrench, I cant remember witch way to turn to slow or advance it though. I had this problem when I put a high performance distributer on my 400 that was in my late '70 Fury. Changed the springs and problem solved. I dont think these distributers where ment for stock engines.
