early model 71/4 rearends
Where do I find a short enough 7 1/4 rearend with 355 or lower gears? What kind of cars or trucks do I look for at bone yard? But it has to fit behind a 65 a body w/o looking silly. Thank You

since you have an a-body, here are your rearend swap possibilities:
Below are from A-body Cars ('60-'76 Valiant, '63-'76 Dart, '70-'76 Duster, '71-'72 Demon, '71-'76 Scamp, etc...) '60-'76 7 1/4 Rearend (available in 4" and 4.5" bolt patterns-weak) '60-'72 8 3/4 Rearend (4" bolt pattern-hard to find, but strong-lots of gear ratios) '73-'76 8 1/4 Rearend (4.5" bolt pattern-pretty strong, decent gear ratio selection-downfall is c-clips and wider track) Now is the off the wall swap that will work: Late '70's Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch 8" ford rearend. Has drop out center section, lots of gear ratios, very strong, 4.5" bolt pattern-downside is that it is a little wider than other rearends, which may pose a problem in early a-bodies. |

I got a 8 3/4, just didnt want to waste it behind a slant six(aprox.300hp on nitrous) but I am working with a 4 speed, so I guess I can probably use it.

if your making 300hp on nitrous, the 7 1/4 WILL NEVER hold up. I've heard of people granading these things with STOCK SLANTS! Put that 8 3/4 in!
