1975 tangled with 1968 chevy chevelle 427 for 200 bucks.jumped this cat off the line by a car lenght and he couldn,t catch me.this was one mad dude. he said there ain,t no way a 383 would beat a 427,but i collected the cash that night.a 383 tuned right with the right set up is a formidable advisary.

Maybe neither. Back in 73 my 69 383/4 speed/3.23 gear Charger was never beat in a street race. With Gabriel Air shocks and M/T "J60" x 15 rear tires the car would hook like you wouldn't believe. Bring tach up to 2500 rpm,
side step clutch and nail it, bang second at 6000 and 99% of the time race was over. Very seldom had to use third gear. Beat 427's, 440's, any engine Camero or Mustang. But remember, this was street racing. I'm sure if I had went to strip car would have bogged like no tomorrow. Even took Dad one night, he just shook his head and said don't tell your Mom! |

383's are the working man's wepon of choice backin the day. Being produced by the millions, it was easy to get one and easy to work them up into a stout street fighter. Most people had to make due with a 383 and they did, very well.
High reving, high HP making, OX strong long living engines they were and still can be. |
