Default 65 Polara VS various others

This is about my brother's 1965 Dodge Polara, 383 2bbl automatic. Back in 1978 he was in the Air Force and home on leave. He purchased the Polara from a friend of mine because it was not running right. He did some minor work on it including a cam change and carb rejet. We went to the local cruise spot in Salem, OR known locally as "The Gut". Got involved in 3 races with others, early 70's 350 Camaro, late 60's blown 454 Chevelle and a 302 Boss Maverick. Light to light, won against the Camaro and Chevelle (driver of the Chevelle did not know how to drive his rig I guess). Would have beat the Maverick, but the guy driving it would only race one block, so right as we were about to pass the guy who would get off the line first, he would shut down. So I guess you could say we beat him too. Later I had the pleasure of driving his car from Oregon to Kansas where he was stationed. This was during the lovely 55 mph national speed limit. While traveling across Oregon on I-80N (now known as I-84) I came acrosss an early 70's big block Corvette. We were both bored and managed to get into a race. I know he was surprised to see the Big Dodge running with him all the way up to top speed. He did finally leave me behind, but not very quickly, maybe 2 mph higher top speed than the Dodge had.

I don't know much about the 1965 2 bbl 383. I know before 1965 most 2 bbl big blocks were 361's and 383's usually had 4 bbl carbs. Before 1967 the 2bbl 383 had the same camshaft as the 2bbl 361. The 1966 2bbl 383 had the largest 2bbl carb ever used but still had the 361 cam. The 1967 2bbl 383 got the same cam as the 4bbl 383 but the carb was smaller than the 1966. so 1966 was a large 2bbl carb with a small cam and 1967 was a smaller 2bbl carb with a 4bbl cam. In 1968 when the heads went to the 906 heads the intake was upgraded to match the heads and was a high rise with the same height as the 1968 383 4bbl intake. So 1968 got big exhaust valves with better intake and exhaust ports and a high rise intake on the 2bbl 383. The intake makes a big power difference. When the 361 was discontinued so was it's cam so the cam became the old 4bbl 383 cam before the magnum cam. 1968 and 1969 may have been the best years for the 2bbl 383 but the 4bbl 383 always made more when it's 4bbl carb was increased in size so the carb was still a restriction on the 4bbl 383. Swapping the 383 Magnum carb for a 440 Magnum carb really helped a lot. The old 1967 and older low rise intakes were pretty restrictive. Mopar used to sell single plane 2x4bbl intakes complete with carbs and air filters in 1966.

what is this larger 2barrel carb your talking about? chrysler used two types i know of prior to 71 stromberg and carter for thier 2 barrel engines, both have same bore and work about the same.

the 2 x 4 setup your refering too is off 58s. 60-61 had cross ram with carbs over exhaust manifolds while 62-64 had the inline for 413, and max wedge had the cross ram simular to hemi offset carb. inlines where usually cast while the others were white metal - aluminum although i have seen them in cast iron as well but they are rare.

In 1966 Mopar sold over the counter a 2x4 cast iron intake complete with carbs, linkage and a pair a small air cleaners. They made them for the B and the RB engines. They were cast iron and single plane with inline carbs. There may have have been a 2x4 option in the 1962 383 Dart also. In the 1966 the 2bbl 383 had the largest 2bbl ever used on a Mopar car. This engine came with the smaller 361 2bbl camshaft though. In 1967 a smaller 2bbl was used but the 2bbl 383 got the 4bbl 383 camshaft. In 1968 the 2bbl 383 got a high rise intake to mate to the 906 heads instead of the older low rise intake and used the older, non-magnum 4bbl camshaft that was also standard in the 350 hp 440.
