My Ram LOST it's first street race....
Well folks, after 2 years of ownership my Ram has been pretty quick for a 4WD. I've beaten every truck and most every car I've raced against. Granted I haven't raced any Mustang GT's or Z28s but I feel for it's weight my truck has some balls.
I lost today to a Buick Grand National. How quick are these things? It looked modified from stock. I saw all sorts of performance oriented stickers on the back window. Off the line he had me and was pulling hard till about 30mph where we were even, and suprisely top end was pretty close, but he definately beat me. Don't those things have a blown V6? Anyone have any specs on these? |

Yeah, I thought those GN's were pretty damn quick. Gears will happen eventually, but not now. I just have no money for that kind of thing. Next on the agenda is a Mopar PCM, 180* t-stat and IAT adjuster. That should get me a little quicker.

Buick GN's were in the mid 14's with the POS stock OEM tires. They are 3.8 intercooled turbo'ed 6 cylinders. Doesn't take many mods to get into the 13's.

Get used to it. Because you will never beat a GN in your 5000lb truck. thanks trucker.

close gthomas, your close to being right. In 86 they were the fastest production car in america. same in 87 with the limited production GNX, They would run a 13.25 from the factory without a lick of modifications. those have been and always will be my favorite 80's vehicle. hell i still wish they made them today!!!

My old man had an 86 in 86 all I remember is sitting in the back and hearing rubber squeling and my head and back being held back against the seat when he took off!! Damn those things sure are bad ass!

Grand Nationals are fast. No questions about it. Sometimes I have luck beating them with my Cuda, other times no luck at all. Only thing I can recommend is tell them to turn up thier boost cause they will go faster. Then maybe they'll grenade all over the sidewalk instead of completing the race. Just a thought......

Well look at it this way, Its better than losing a race to a gen 1 L.
But it was my first race, and that was years ago. I have since redeamed myself Just like I know that you can with more mods. ooo14 |

Magnum Monster. Those GNX's are very quick. If I remember correctly they were the fastest production cars in 86. V8 hp out of a v6. If it's all origional It's sure worth a pretty penny now. As for raceing gt mustangs or z28's. Don't waste your time. I think the new gt's make around 320 hp stock.

My last time at the track I saw a GN on slicks and with a k&n filter, run a 12.1 with stock internals and 87,000 miles on the car. He was racing a '01 Lightning pushing 15 lbs of boost and slicks that ran a 12.0. Man what a supercharger can do for ya, that is truly a race of technology. A 1987 supercharged v-6 against a 2001 5,000lb truck with a charger, can't wait for the hemi's in 1500 reg cab, can't come soon enough.....ramiam

Actually the GNs were turbocharged with an intercoller. Stock hp in 86 was 235 and in 87 it was 245. Stock they do low 14s in the 1/4 and 0-60 in like 6 sec. I had an 87 before i got my R/T and it was a very quick car but i had to get rid of it because i did not have the time or the money to put into it, plus the car had some electrcal problems so i got rid of it before it got really bad on me. I miss it alot but i dont miss the problem that it had constally and the money it was taking from me .

At the dragstrip I go to, there a GN that runs low 11's, and has been doing it for a couple years now. Some other guy has a POS VOLVO station wagon (brown paint and rust) with what he says is an older 3.8 turbo V6 buick in it, along with nitrous. I've seen it go in the 12's. A good sleeper car.

There is no way you could keep up in your truck!
Your post sounds a little bogus to me or you were drinkin hooch when you wrote it because a GN would of handed you your ass nomatter what speed you raced him, sound more like a kid who streetraces and thinks since the guys a block ahead of him that hes right with him.
