Default Wife picks on a Vette.

Hello all,

My wife told me about this last week,I still get a chuckle when I think about it.

The wife is driving her car(73 Dart sport 340,stroked to 416,Eddy heads,Isky 280 mega hyd,Demon 750,blah,blah...)down 9th street. She stops at the stop sign and has to wait for a little old lady to cross the street.Well, the guy in the vette behind her starts getting impatient and starts blowing his horn and yelling at her. Finally the old lady crosses the street and the wife starts to go,however the knucklehead in the vette can't control himself anymore and crosses the double yellow line punches it and TRIES to go around the Dart. The misses sees this and thinks "no frickin way" and mats the peddal on the Dart.Needless to say the guy in the vette never had a chance as the Dart rocketed up hill towards the traffic light leaving the vette about three car lengths back,he had to give up and pull back BEHIND the Dart. When she gets to the light thats her turn ,so she gets in the right lane. The guy in the vette is going straight and pulls up next to her but he never looked over .Probably thinking about how cool those 73 Dart Sport tail light look !

Regards,
Bill

Any idea on the year of the Vette? Great story, just a little hard to believe.

Stock vettes are not that fast, My buddy owns a 1978 vette and it is a toad even with a warmed over 350. And my old boss has a 92 and I was not impressed at all.

Yeaah, that's why I was asking what year it was, the new vettes would walk all over a 360 even give the 440 a good run.

Laugh From a rolling start...

Even my big ugly has beat every Vette it has run. # now, and the newest was some new thing called a Z-4 or Z04 or something. I admit it wasn't by much, but it got him, and my Frankendodge has a 360 (I admit it is quite warm though) but I also have 4:10 gearing. No way would it have out launched, though, he would have taken off and gone about the full quarter while I smoked the tires! DARNED OPEN DIFF! AND 5300 POUNDS! If I could shave off about 2000 pounds, this thing would be incredible!

even a new vette is low 13's, maybe high 12's with a good driver. I doubt if most new vette owners (old mid life crisis guys) could rack through the gears to hit those numbers. sorry if I offended any old mid life crisis guys.

Still, an 80 year old with a auto could run high 13's, what would the 360 be pulling? 14-15 second 1/4's at best?
I guess if they were into second gear the 360 would have a chance.

Stock dart 360 or bigblock bills?

Stock 360 dart the vette would eat it. But big block bills I think would walk it.

If you reread the first post it isn't a stock 360 Dart, stroked 340 to 416.....even a new vette with a driver would get stomped on.
Next new Vette I see at the track I'll race it and see what times they run.

No idea what year the vette was,to the wife they all look the same(you know, head lights getting smaller in the rear view mirrior he...he..). Seriously though I don't think her Dart would be able to smoke a new vette, seat of the pants feel is mid to low 13's. It does have a sure-grip but "only" 3:23's out back, and the converters a kind of tight hughes 11".If I ripped the a/c out of it the thing would probably pick up a half second, those old school compressors are HEAVY.For her it's plenty fast enough, when I first put it together she couldn't keep her foot out of it and the back tires disappeared in clouds of tire smoke. It sure is a fun car to drive, although right now with the fuel prices so high it kind of takes some of the joy out of it.

Regards,
Bill

Sounds like one heck of a fun car to drive Your wife is a lucky lady! Sorry mate, I wasn't trying to take the lime light away, just don't understand it sometimes when people brag about beating cars they have no chance in hell of beating. Not your story I believe that, just a few others out there that need to think about what there actually saying. It's like saying my 2-Litre Turbo can whoop a HEMI! It can it's part true, a Ram. But that doesn't mean I go around saying I can whoop HEMI's.

I would not under estimate a Dart, even with 3.23 gears. My buddy I race with at the track races his daily driver 4 door 67 Dart. It has a low comp 360(115 cylinder psi) In full street trim as driven daily it turns 13.0@107mph with 3.23 gears. In street trim he kicks my butt big time. I have raced a few of the new Camaro and Firebirds which are pretty much as fast as the vettes and I kill them. Fastest I raced went 13.50, a few only went 14's. I have to run sticky tires to go 12's, my buddy can go 13.0 on hard radials. His engine is something I could build in my driveway.

nz 440 I'm not sure how much time you spend at the track but new unmodified vettes (and I mean zo6's) do pretty good to get into the 13's. Yeah sure road & track can cut 12.8 passes with them but then we are looking at a proffesional driver that gets as many passes as needed to get that pass thats recorded in the magazine. I own a stock stroke 340 8.5-1 compression with cam and intake runs 12.2@114 with 3.55's.

Not doubting how quick the Mopar small block army is, but I'm sure most Vettes around wonldn't be stock standard.

i dont think its so hard to kick a vette´s ass.
its not bad for a stock car,
but nothing against a properly modified whatever,
ford, gm or mopar even w. a 6cyl.

just a matter of hp vs. wheight and decent traction.

take the challenge trough the twisties, it would be a
different story, but still not hopeless

Confused I don't know...

If he drives like Gordon or Harvick or lil' e, you may end up in the wall! If I start out in front, I can keep him behind in the twisties. (Partially due to the battleship-sized hunk of steel under my butt and creative swerving that would make him think thrice!) Dirty I know, but if my truck can take an auto-equipped Vette, and that was a C-4, not a Z-4, sorry. Then I know my FrankenDodge has more going for it than it's "beautiful" looks!

So what does your truck trap in the 1/4? BTW a STOCK ZO6 traps at 113-115 mph.

Thumbs down It was C4

The Vette was mid-late nineties. It belongs to a local attorney, and I caught him at a gas pump a few days later while I was driving my Ramcharger. Anyway, I don't know much about Vettes, but he said it had a fresh "C4" engine. He explained that it was about 300 horses. I told him who I was, what had happened, and he just laughed. He said from a standing start he could take me, I said he was right. I also told him if my truck weighed what his Vette weighed, he wouldn't touch me. He just smiled and said, his looked faster even if it wasn't and he really loved his car. After how close it was, I know I can't take a Z06, cuz he said they were really fast. Oh, the Zo4 is an emblem on the car he added cuz it was on a faster, more exclusive version of the Vette. I never heard of it. Like the guy, he wasn't a horse's butt like most Chevy guys. Anyway, thus is my ignorance in all things Chevy brought to light.

Cry I can see it now...

Dear Carl,

This letter is to inform you that the camshaft and lifter set you ordered, and the custom crankshaft were in shipment to you as of yesterday. The bad news is that during the drive, the truck flipped over, hurtling them into a passing helicopter. The pilot saw this happen and it scared him, so he veered off course, at which time the chopper tilted wildly to the right, dumping the hapless parts onto a small freighter near Sydney. The freighter, aptly named "Murphy's Tug" was making full steam for Kiwiland, when a gay whale saw it, and lusted for the thrumming of the engines, so he decided to swim with the ship, and when he found out it was not nuclear powered, he decided to swim away. When he turned, it created a 30 ft. wave that washed the parts off the deck, into the water near the Great Barrier Reef, where they rest now, waiting for your arrival to retrieve them. If you prefer, we can send them by carrier crab or wait 5-7 days for different ones, your choice. Thank you for you understanding, and know that we sometines have this happen.

Sincerely, The Bowery Boys Parts Club

(Now you know you need to sleep!)
