Default Slant Six Story ..(all true )

This is one for the Slant Six lovers .......( a true story )

I'm 66 years old and retired now but 'Back in the Day' in the early to late 60's
I was very heavy into racing. I started with a 57 Ply 301 v8 then moved up to
a new 65 Valiant 273 HiPo 4 spd. At that time all the strip racing was NHRA.
The 65 Valiant 273 HiPo fell into the top of the class by just 12 pounds.
A great class car, it was very rare for me to be beat in my class, I really don't
remember ever being beat but I'm sure it must have happened maybe once or twice.

Anyway, this was in 1967 ( IIRC ) a friend of mine had a 61 Lancer with an aluminum
225 /6. The body was junk so he pulled the engine and scrapped the body. We were
setting around the garage one day doing the usual Bench Racing and came up with an
idea ... beef up his Slanter and drop it in my Strip setup 65 body.
So we popped the head and had it milled .125 ths. ( those old heads had some meat
to them ), had the block decked, stuck in a regrind cam (junk, it didn't work that
well) and an Offy 4bbl intake with my Carter AFB carb from my 273 HiPo. We bolted
this up to my 4 spd trans and stuck a 5.83 screw in the rear end. This was a REAL
Street Racer.
For fuel I would mix a gallon of Nitro, a gallon of Alcohol, and 3 gallons of 147
octane AvGas.
With the suspension setup I was using this combo would pick up the front wheels
on a Hole Shot and carry them thru 1st gear.

A really memorable street race was a race with an Olds 442 set up and lettered
for the strip. He was cruising the sreets looking for some fun. Afterword I'm
sure he would have rather not met up with me. We were cruising Gratiot just
outside of Detriot. We pulled side by side and looked each other over and gave
the nod. We poked along until we could catch a Red light togother.
On the Green we both hammered it, I launched carrying the front wheels off the
ground about 12 inches thru 1st gear then banged 2nd. By the time I hit 4th gear
and about 60 MPH I had Bus lengths on the Olds 442. It was time to shut down.
He pulled back up along side and my buddy held up five fingers on one hand and
one finger on the other and smiled at the guy. The guy hollered back " No F'ing Way".
We pulled off on a side street and stopped. He had to see for himself. I popped the
hood. He looked the engine over and was fuming, then says "Where is the battery?"
I smiled and said "In the trunk where it belongs".
He REALLY was PISSED. He had been stomped into the ground by a little Slant Six.

Another one for the Slanters .........

This happened one evening, I was alone (don't remember where I was going)

Traffic was light, I had stopped at a red light and a 66 Mustang fast back
stopped at the light next to me ( I don't know where he came from, I didn't
see him comming in my mirror ). This Mustang was VERY healthy. Set up for
the strip, Hi-Rise bubbled hood, lettered, Slicks, the works.....
As I said, a very healthy sounding engine, (he sure wasn't stock).

There was 2 of them in the car. I was in the right lane and they were in the center lane.
When they stopped for the light the passenger in the Mustang
looked over at me ( the once over look ) then held up one fingger and twirled
it around (meaning lets do it).
I thought about it a second, then looked in my mirror, no traffic comming yet.
So I dropped it in reverse and backed up a couple lengths. They were
watching me wondering 'What the Hell is he doing'.
I brought the Slanter up to 5 grand and Jack-Rabbited the clutch, pulling
the front wheels off the ground a few inches and hitting the brakes and
stopping at the light again.
I looked over at the guys in the Mustang again, smiled and nodded OK.
The Mustangers changed their mind.
We eased away from the light, ... no race .....
The humorous thing was.. they may have actually had a chance

Here is a pic of my 65 Valiant Signet 2 dr hardtop 273 ci 235 hp 4spd.
This pic was taken in May of 1967 a Detroit Dragway.
Its the only pic I still have of the car back then.
I still have the car, bought it new 41 years ago.

(and yes, I know Cyanide is spelled wrong, for some reason I thought
it looked better that way)

You said you mixed nitro, alcohol, and av gas. What if any changes to the carb did you have to make? Did you have any problems with using nitro? Dave

Actually, no I didn't make much of any jetting change.
With the Carter AFB carb on the Offy intake the engine seemed to run
rich enough.
The compression on that motor was high enough that it really rattled
on pump gas.

The thing to remember with Nitro is it doesn't stay mixed with gas.
You have to keep it shook up.

I remember one time, the guys in our group decided to go to Grand Bend
Dragway in Canada to get away from all the locals in the Detroit area.
( About a hundred mile drive )
It seems that everyone had the same idea on the same weekend. All the
same guys we raced against at the local Detroit area strips were at
Grand Bend that weekend. The Techs at Grand Bend had a tendency to
not see the cheating going on. If you said your motor was stock then they
didn't argue, (it was a money thing, the US racers brought in money).

Anyway, it was very humorous to watch all the racers in the pits.
They were all standing around leaning against their cars and continually
nudging the car causing the car to rock back and forth. ( to keep the
fuel mixed ). If I hadn't of known better I would have thought this was
a 'Fuel Stocker' meet
My buddy who had a 65 Mustang 289 HiPo, (running Nitro, as we all were )
had the Balls to complain to a Tech that the guy he was running against
for Top Stock Eliminator was running fuel. You couldn't stand back behind
the starting line, the Nitro fumes were so bad they made your eyes water.
The Tech said "Naw, I don't smell anything" ...... yah Riiiiiight

So the main thing to remember is to keep it mixed, Nitro is heaver than
gas and will settle to the bottom of the tank. If you let it settle and get
a big load all at once (pedal to the metal) it could be "Lunch Time".
A blown piston rod, or shattered piston.
But it can give a real boost in power if used correctly.
