Question 1967 coronet

Hi I am looking for help with a problem I am having with my 1967 coronet. It is a four speed 383 that keeps jumping from 2nd and/or 3rd gear into neutural when downshifting. I would appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks!!

Welcome to the board.

If the shifter is properly adjusted, jumping out of gear is usually caused by worn synchros. Nothing you can do but replace the worn parts.

Wasn't a Mopar, but i've also seen it happen when the bearings were going and letting things move around too much... cure is pretty much the same though, rip her open and see what's wrong before things get uglier in there.

Whatever this is, it's likely inside the gearbox, not the shifter.

But to be sure, jack it up, have a helper put it in various gears, and then pull the linkage out of the gearbox lever and see if the lever will move further into gear than the shifter

About the only thing I know of that would cause this is if the shifter has the "syncrostop" adjustment bolts, which are obvious

Remove and inspect the side cover for slop and damage, and inspect the forks for damage, bent, etc.

But the problem is USUALLY right in the gearbox

What whbaron posted is true, as well. There is only one large ball bearing in the junction of the main/ tail case, that provides thrust location for the mainshaft. If it gets bad enough, it will allow things to move in there.

You need to take a good look at the brass stop rings, and the engagement areas of the sliders and gears. If these get worn back far enough, it will never stay in gear
