My first was a '64 Dodge "440". (model designation not engine size) It had a 318 poly which I discarded & replaced w/ a 383 out of a '68 Charger. This was my first "performance" car.

First car was a 1968 Plymouth Satellite that taught me a lot about the people in the industry more than mechanics. Originally a 273 automatic (loved that motor!), being 17, within 8 months I found one in a pick and pull that had been hit in the rear and pulled the hemi/kframe and 4 speed from it and put it in mine. The 8 1/4 rear I had lasted a day or so. The junkyard guy told me they didn't have anything so I bought a Dana 60 from a local speed shop retail (I had NO idea of what I was doing at the time). Within a year I met a "mopar guy" that let me know how ripped off I was and told me all the rears I could have used. Had it for like 5 years and had alor of fun with it. Got it into the high 13s at the strip. Friday nights it would get me to the dirt track races at Flemington NJ then to Englishtown Saturday morning to get the need for speed of of the system.

First car and first Mopar was a 48 Plymouth business coupe 218 flathead six with a three speed on the column. Bought it when I was 14 with yard mowing money. Lived in a small town in SW Missouri so we would take it out into the country and my parents would let me drive the country roads. Drove it through most of high school with the flathead until it spun a bearing. Then bought my grandfather's 68 Plymouth wagon, pulled the 383 and 727. Rebuilt the engine and dropped it in the 48.

1964 Dodge 440 (model designation not eng. size) Came with 318 poly with a rod sticking through the block. I picked up a 383 from a 68 Charger & a trans (pushbutton). Car ran great & I've had a succession of various Dodge & Plymouth cars since. My current ride is a '71 Dart Swinger.

I had a '67 Dart GT with the 273 HP in it and a 4 speed. Maybe one of the most fun MoPars I owned. You're right about a '68 "B" body with the 273, seems rare indeed. |

1964 Dodge 440 (trim level, not engine size) It came w/ a 318 (poly, blown up) I picked up a 383 from a '68 Charger, 727 from a salvage yard and I was in business. I loved the B engine for it's simplicity. I hot rodded it for a couple of years until I sold it to build a drag car. Another Mopar of coerce.

I still have my first Mopar, my first car is a 1972 Cuda 340.
I bought the car for $500 in 1982. It wrecked when the previous owner rearended a truck, luckily they hit the truck hit above the frame, but taking out the inner fender in the process, (but leaving the front frame section intact.). This is actually my current focus, when I am done it will look like a 70 AAR Cuda, but will be painted in the original color (I call it Petty Blue - B3 if I remember the code right) |
