body swap
I plan on swapping the body of my 51 pickup onto the frame of my 74 Ram.
Does anyone know if this will work OK? Any advice? |

That is a good question! I've been considering something along the same lines with this old 74 Dodge 4x4 I have. The body is shot, so something needs to be done.
One way I've considered to do it is to cut off the majority of the cab from the 77, leaving the floorpan, firewall and possibly, the dash unit. Then dropping a different cab over that and joining the two, after trimming to fit. I've got a few other projects ahead of this one, so it may be awhile I get to it. The advantage I see is not having to rewire the firewall, mess with the steering column location and many other things. The only thing that may be a problem is that early truck cabs, as well as most vintage vehicles are fairly more narrow than vehicles from the mid 50's and later. This may work though, just trim and fit! I haven't got a body donor for my 74 yet, though I'm considering using this old 51 Plymouth 4 door I bought for parts. It's hardly cherry, but for 4x4 usage, it may do the trick. I do think swapping cabs and sheetmetal is easier than adapting modern suspension and electronics to a vintage frame, but probably will still take quite a bit of adapting, especially wherever the front clip , cab and bed meet the new frame. |
