Cross-Ventilated Rotors. Worth It?
Are Cross-Ventilated Rotors worth the cost?
I'm about due for pads and because there is a slight vibration from a hot spot on one of the rotors I may replace the rotors rather than turn them. I often carry large payloads but, more importantly my stopping involves long periods of gentle braking, empty or loaded, rather than hard braking. |

Probably not. There is even a debate as to wether slotted rotors are better than drilled rotors. Nobody can agree. I think for mostly stock vehicles the stock stuff will work just fine.

The main benefit from drilled and/or slotted rotors is better heat dissipation and the provision of exits for the gas emitted by the pad material. So there won't be much, if any, difference for normal braking. Differences would be for long downhill braking, especially when towing, or racing, where the brakes don't get a chance to cool off between applications.
Disc brakes are much less to fade than drum brakes. The gas from the brake linings would build up inside the drum. The gas acted as a lubricant, often reducing the effective friction to zero. That gave a hard pedal, but no brakes. With discs, there is very little containment of the gas. What there is may be reduced by the slots and holes. |

That is something I hadn't heard before.

The hotter the brakes get, the more gas emitted.
A neat thing is the relatively new ceramic rotors and pads. Much less heat buildup and no gas. But only on very expensive cars and an $8000 or more option. |
