Infinity system
I've got a '90 Imperial with the Chrysler Infinity sound system. The original AM/FM cassette malfunctioned by not fully ejecting a tape and jamming, thus rendering the radio inoperative, as well. I had a radio/CD player that had been in a '90 New Yorker w/Infinity system and installed that. It played, but no bass and very little volume. I thought it had become defective sitting for 18 months, so bought a new radio/CD unit from Walmart (same brand) with an installation kit and put it in. Same results; no bass & very low volume.
Any one have any expertise with these Infinitys? What have I done wrong? Followed directions to the letter. Help, my wife wants her tunes back! Paul H |

It's possible one of your speakers has gone bad. Maybe rodents chewed the wiring or the cone.

Infinity speakers
I suppose anything is possible, but would one speaker's failure cause total loss of bass and reduce the volume of all? I understand that there are amps built in to each speaker and/or there is a separate amplifier somewhere in the vehicle. Do you have any idea where it might be located?

The Infinity head unit activates the amplifiers. If you use an aftermarket head unit, you will need the correct harness adapter for the Infinity system. It will power up the amps. You will get what you described if the amps are not on.

Infinity speakers
Ed, the wiring harness adapter that I used had a provision for the Infinity system and I was careful to hook it up. Also, the first unit that I tried had worked perfectly in another Infinity equipped car. I'm really confused, now.

I'm guessing. For whatever it's worth, since you have the identical problem with each step, there is a bad circuit between the head unit and the amps. Could be a connection or a wire. You might want to check continuity between head unit and amps. Can you play with an ohmmeter?

Yes, I have a multi-meter, but I am not sure where the amplifier is. There isn't room under the dash. Anyone know where to look?

I may be mistaken; however, I thought that it was individual amps at the speakers.

Infinity restored
I finally took the car to a woman who does car stereo work for dealers in this area and she found a wire way back in the dash that was burned off. Repaired it and all the radios work now.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Paul H |
