Question

I am about to weld my spring pearches on the 8 3/4 axle housing. (I bought a narrowed rear axle and mini tubbed my 69 Dart with a 3" per side spring relocation kit). This is a street car and an occasional (4 trips a year) to the strip car. I made(welded) spring shackles that have NO flex in them. I have welded the frame boxes to the front very well. Springs are Super Stock 003 and 002.

Question: What can I do to limit the rear axle from moving side to side (so the tires dont touch the inside or outside of the wheel wells?

Any thoughts on Welding the pearches a little bit to the inside and "stretch" the springs over until they mount in the locator hole? I'm thinking that this would sort of "preload" the spring from side to side. Then when going around a bend, it might not move so much from side to side. It might limit the movement up and down a little, but not much. Just my thinking. Any thoughts?

How much side to side movement are you getting?

You have to have flex in your shackles or it will ride like a basketball!!The best way is to use stiffer shocks and a sway bar, dont add side load to a spring it will flex in a self destructive way,...PRO...

I'm probably not getting too much flex. It is just going to be a tight fit in the wheelwells, and I want as much rubber under there that I can get away with. Depending on the two tires that I'm looking at, one will give me about 1.0 inches of clearance to the inside of the wheelwell and the same to the outside. The other tire will give me about .6 inches of clearance to the inside and the outside. This is measured at the fattest part (Sidewall). I'd like to go to the fatter tires, but I don't want it to rub going around corners.

With an inch of clearance on each side, urethane bushings and good shocks should do the trick. If you preload the springs to the side, the suspension won't work properly, and it could break the springs. Dennis

If your axle were welded to the frame, you'd still get side to side movement. The rim will move side to side within the tire as the sidewall flexes.A stiff sidewall is the only way to lessen this, which isn't good for hooking up.I ran a hoosier 325-50 in my 69 dart with the same inboard kit you have.I had to trim the wheel opening lip for clearance though.
