Default marine 440

Does anyone know if there is a significant difference between automobile 440's and marine 440's. I have an opportunity to buy 2 marine 440's for real cheap, but I would need to know if they are workable, or if I would be stuck with a couple of boat motors. Thanks.

One of the first things you will need to look at is whether or not this boat was used in fresh water or salt. If it's salt, stop right there. If it's fresh, you'll want to look at the mounts of course, water pump, thermostat and housing, cylinder heads, etc. Depending on how the boat was cooled as to how much rust may in the block and heads (which is why you never look at a salt water boat) as this rust directly relates to how much heat the motor will take on the street. Very few times will a marine applied motor ever make it back to the street because of this. Whith the cost of changing everything over and what the motors might cost from him, I would think you're better off with a junkyard block. Maybe even a crate motor. It may cost you less in cash and headaches later. May not be what you want to hear, but it also may just save your ride later.

One of the motors had the heads pulled off, and was otherwise pretty accessable, and it looked pretty clean. But in the interest of observation, I would need to look at them a little closer (they are currently underneath a trailer in a muddy field). But now at least I know what to look for specifically. Thanks a lot.

Another thing is that the guy I bought my Power wagon off of owned a marina and was building a twinn 440 powered boat. Due to the torque one engine had to spin backwards. Can't remember exactly what was different, except of course the cam was. Make sure that they both will run in the right direction
