I just got a call about a good deal on a rebuilt marine Hemi. I don't know much about these engines, and I was wondering what is the difference between marine and non marine. Can it still be used in a car? are they a good engine?
I am waiting to hear on specifics, like engine size, long/short block etc. Is there any questions I should be asking? thanks Julian |

Marine engines have ignition protected alternators, distributors and any electrical components that may produce a spark. Carburetors must be drip proof and mechanical fuel pumps have a recovery tube in case they leak.
Head and intake gaskets are marine grade that can withstand the effects of sea water. Exhaust manifolds are water cooled. Most marine engines are truck engines that have been "marinized" and are low compression and are cammed to run WOT at about 4600 RPM. High performance blown and injected units aside, marine engines do not produce gobs of horsepower. Another thing to consider is rotation. Some are CW and some are CCW. I haven't heard of any new generation hemis being marinized yet and am not sure if the 426s ever made it into the water. The engine might be a "one off" from some small builder, or it is based on the old 331,354,392 hemis. The last Chrysler marine engines made that I am aware of were 360s. I am not even sure if Chrysler has a marine division anymore, although independent builders like Crusader did marine conversions. I just did a little research on Google and I did find that the 426 was offered in a marine version, although the old 354 was pretty popular. Check this site out: http://www.thehemi.com/engines.php |

The boat I normally run has a 318 but the owners manual shows other engine options, and one of them is a 426 with 2 4s.So I know they made them in the mid to late 60s.

made by carter, model number BM45S which is a 331,only 200 horse @3800 Rs so my 318 in the cabin cruiser has almost the same output, but in a much bigger boat.I will spend a little time on it, might just run,it turns freely and has oil in it so you just never know.

but I dont see a name on it anywhere yet,its your typical fiberglass 18 ft or so old boat. The motor sits backwards with a flywheel forward and a transmission, starter and waterpump running off the front accessory drive setup.somewhat like you would see on a detroit diesel.Prop on a long shaft with a rudder behind it.Its old,but I bet it moves.Cant decide whether or not to deal him out of it as is or just get it running and bill him.I already have 7 boats so I dont really need it,its just it has a HEMI!With a better intake I might even get 300 horse out of it,dump it in the cabin cruiser, stern drive and all.If I tried to use the existing volvo penta 200 outdrive it wouldnt like it Im afraid.

Sounds like a run of the mill inboard. Are you sure it is a 331?

There are some people over there wondering about the 426 marine also,it seems that they turn backwards and take a lefty cam,run a different crank that has gear drive only, and the block is supposedly the same.So if you wanted to put one in a car,you would need to change alot of stuff to make it happen.

So I'm thinking starter, waterpump, cam, distributor, possibly oil pump (so far all relatively cheap). Wouldn't the crank, pistons, rods, heads work either way?

If the price is right, just snag it.If its gold plated, better think twice.I would think that someone over at the hemi site would love to have it though.
