Default Will a diesel turbo work

The Daytona turbo Z uses a turbonetics that is twice as big as the stock one. It makes lots of power (385horse power) but were looking to double that. We are buying the new transaxel now on the market, said to handle over 800 horse power. Has anyone ever run a turbo off a big diesel semi. I hear the big rigs today are making 700+ horse with over 2000 ft-lbs. If that doesn't work we will have to run two of them I guess.

If you go to big you will have to much lag. Bigger is not allways better.

Correct two small ones will spool up faster than on large one. I have a friend working on a four turbo application on a 451 right now, but the plumbing is a night mare

i own a semi ,,those diesels are like 900 ci.. it will take for ever to get enough exhaust from a 153 ci 4 popper to make it spool,,

try if you like ,,id like to hear the results but i wouldnt do it if it were me, call chris from t/u and ask him about it..hes a turbo guru for our niche

Use nitrous to spool the turbo. My buddy does this in his fwd 91 eagle TSI. He runs 11.40's with a stock suspension. But if you opt not to you may go way too large and have alot of problems.

Default New Garret turbo?

I guess we are going to test a twin garret system. The builder said max horsepower will be 500 to 550. Any more and we get into after market blocks and trick heads. That is some very high dollar stuff. I guess 500+ horsepower from a 4 banger isn't to bad.

Wink More to it...

There's more to matching a turbo to an engine than the size..
You have to calculate the airflow volume of the engine, then the pressure ratio, then look at compressor speeds and efficiency on a compressor map, etc, etc.

There different A/R ratios for the exh housing that have to be explored, along with different trim designs.

I'd suggest you call one of the better known turbo mfgrs.
My favorite is John Craig @ Limit Engineering. He and his staff are a most racer oriented group of folks that will satisfy all your questions, and provide a product that will do the job right..

Forget the diesel turbo.. as said, it likely will not work..

Two small turbos will not outspool one large one making similar power. That is a common misconseption. In some plumbing nightmare cases where manifolds become exssessively large in order to go with a single turbo, two smaller turbos tucked away can minimize pressure and temperature losses though.

Most deisel truck turbos are T4 based so you can usually buy a new turbine/compressor housings for it to suit your needs.
