I gotta say thats pretty bad ass and ballzy that they the mob of people just close down the freeway and start going at it with some pretty nice looking cars all things considered. Most of those Volvo's and Audi's look like they had big block V8s stuffed in them.

Default Street Racing

Back in the late '70s and early '80s we used to race that way in Bakersfield,Ca, I know it was unsafe but we all do dumb things.

We, I mean they, still do that crazy stuff here in Connecticut, USA. Not as much anymore but every now and again. They try to keep it as safe as a bunch of renegades can ! It is a rush. It was funny to see how unconcerned they are with the police ! LOVED that Challenger ! They have some dang nice cars over there !

Still done like that around here on occasion. But always on a long straight stretch of country road, not in town. Learned that lesson the easy-hard way in high school. I had a blown 69 Chevelle SS 396 4spd at the time (wish I still had it). Guy pulls up beside me at a redlight in a 64 GTO. Green light we both nailed it. I jumped out a couple lenghts ahead just in time to see 3 state troopers coming out of Hardee's about 1/2 block from the light. He and I both ran. They never got close enough to me to get my tag #, but as it turned out, one of the troopers was a friend of my dad's, and recognized my car as I shot past him. He was sitting in the living room telling my dad about it when I got home. My last in-town race.

Hey, scredneck, I introduced my parents to the locals and state police a couple times ! Didn't go over to good, I was 17 or 18 at the time. Had a 65 Belvedere at the time. Conversation went something like " We didn't catch him and we'd like you to take his licence away before he kills somebody ". I thought it was pretty cool at the time. I'm DAMNED LUCKY I didn't hurt or kill someone. The bad part was that I went home that same day to try to patch up things with my folks because I wasn't living at home anymore. ( I wonder why ?? !!! )I got there about an hour after the cops left ! WOW what a reception I got from my Dad. There was rubber all the way up the road from me taking off so my Dad couldn't kick my ass ! That Belvedere would roll !

I have seen this thread for a while here & never bothered to open it up . I thought who cares about street racing in the Sudan, thats in Africa isn't it?
To my suprise it was in Sweden The mis-spells on this board range from the comical to the pathetic. Can the moderators (or "Super Moderators) possibly put "spell check" on Moparchat? Does anybody bother to proof read what they write before they post it?

Question

As a former Long Islander, I was sad to see the last drag strip go away There was once 3 strips. How long till some ugly street racing incident rears it's ugly head on long Island? I had heard there is some effort to get a strip built on the Grumann property in Calverton. Have you heard any rumblings to that effect?

I live in jersey, and know what you mean about the lack of tracks. At one time there were at least 30-40 tracks in the tri state area, I know of 3 in jersey still left. They take away tracks and then they complain about street racing.

Man! Those people are Nucking Futs. Close off an interstate (like) road and drag race? I applaud their enthusiasm though.

When we went out to a deserted location for a night of fun back in the days half the fun was when every one scattered when the cops finally showed up. Back then if they caught one of us all they done was pryed for info. Now they write you for participating in illegal activitys. Where have all the good times gone, lol.

HA, do that and half the post here would never decipher! Ever try to read "Forrest Gump" in book form? Now that is a lesson in phonetic dialects. And about that spell checker to the right of the emoticons, never noticed it because of that STUPID Ebay flash pop up, covers the entire right side of that box and you cant move it, or look under it or close it. Hey moderator, whats up with that?

Rumblefish ( I still love that screen name) was that last drag strip "National Speed way"?

So what do you so now? E'town, Atco, Great Meadows? Are they all still open?
...I know E'town is still open.

No, the last drag strip was known as L.I. Motorsports, park run by a crook who took all the money and ran. The promotor had an agreement with the developers that would have let the place stay open as long as rent payments were made. But if he missed 1 payment that was the end . He didn't pay the guy & there was a dirt pile in front of the gate the next week.
N.Y. National Speedway closed in the '80's The original name of L.I. Motorsports park was Westhampton Dragway It had a number of names over the years. I raced @ both tracks, sometimes on the same day!
Long Island it extreamly unfriendly to any type of racing venues,
Thats why I moved to NH (19 miles from New England Dragway.)
